Coder / Abstractor Main Function:
Case ascertainment, abstraction, data entry, staging, and coding of medical records of cancer patients with outstanding detail orientation, excellent organizational ability, combined with strong communication skills and data management experience. These must be performed in accordance with established guidelines, manuals, and definitions as determined by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC); the New York & Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR); the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER), International Classification of Diseases in Oncology (ICD-O), American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), Guthrie Healthcare System Cancer Programs, and other applicable standard setters for inclusion in a comprehensive data base.
Required Qualifications:
License:
Individuals currently holding special certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) in good standing with the National Cancer Registrars Association credentialing institution preferred.
Coder / Abstractor Experience Requirements:
A minimum of two years of experience with health information systems in a healthcare setting or central cancer registry. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Cancer Registry software (Metriq), abstracting, cancer staging methodology, ICD-O coding, and human anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of medical terminology. Experience with data requirements, case preparation for a cancer conference presentation. Excellent communication, teamwork and attention to detail required. Proficient typing and keyboarding required.

Coder / Abstractor Education:
Current cancer abstractors who are eligible to sit for the CTR exam by meeting the following criteria as required by the National Cancer Registrar Association (NCRA):
1. Associate’s Degree, NCRA-Accredited Formal Education Degree or Certificate, and 160-hour practicum in a CTR-staffed cancer registry.
2. Associate’s Degree, Coursework of 2 semesters of Human Anatomy & Physiology, and 1950 hours (equivalent to one year full-time) experience in the Cancer Registry Field.
