Advanced Coding & Abstracting

A 2007 article in the Journal of Registry Management identified race misclassification of Asian groups in a large central registry. Quality assurance studies as well as questions to the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Inquiry and Response System (I & R) and the SEER Inquiry System (SINQ) have identified misinterpretation of coding rules and coding discrepancies for data items including race, address, physician, date of first contact, date of diagnosis as well as text fields. This 3-hour class will present and clarify the coding rules for data items that have been identified as problematic through the above sources. (Recorded live on 7/9/09.)

Cancer Treatment and How to Code It: Surgery, Radiation, Systemic, and Other

This 4-hour class will address specific cancer treatments and how to code the treatment using FORDS definitions.  There will be an emphasis on new surgical, radiation, systemic, and other treatments.  Treatment coding problems identified through quality assurance activities will also be addressed.  (Recorded live on 2/14/08.)

Coding Pitfalls

This 3-hour class will address coding dilemmas identified through quality control of registry data and present solutions with rationale for determining the number of primary tumors using the 2007 MP/H rules, assigning ICD-O-3 topography and histology codes using the ICD-O-3 Manual, completing the collaborative staging data items using the most recent revision of the manual, and completing treatment data items as required by all standard setters. (Recorded live on 11/6/08.)

Collecting Cancer Data: Colon/Rectum/Appendix

This 3-hour class will present the following information for colon, rectum, and appendix: anatomical information needed to abstract and code the cases; how to determine the number of primary tumors; how to code topography and histology; how to code the CSv2 data items; and the treatments and how to code them. (Recorded live on 11/5/09.)

Data Quality and Data Use

This 4-hour class will present ways to evaluate the quality of registry data and ways to use the data.  There will be discussion on using NCDB data as comparison data in registry studies.  There will be presentations on ways to display data so they are understood.  There will be discussion on the importance of using the registry data, ways to encourage facility staff to use the data, and ways that the registrar can show how data can be used.  (Recorded live on 5/8/08.)
